One of the largest policing operations in Sydney’s history will mobilise tomorrow night with crowds of revellers expected to swarm the city harbour for New Year’s Eve celebrations.

In light of the recent terror attack at Bondi Beach, Premier Chris Minns announced measures aimed at ensuring public safety as New Year’s Eve approaches. The announcement is intended to reassure communities that it will be safe to partake in festivities.

“This New Year’s Eve will see a different kind of policing operation,” Minns shared with reporters today.

“Over the past two weeks, we’ve implemented various legislative measures to guarantee safety,” he added.

Premier Minns expressed confidence that the changes would be well-received by families.

“As the police commissioner pointed out, our focus isn’t solely on tackling terrorism or crime, but also on ensuring that people feel secure when they are out with their families in public spaces,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Bondi gears up to commemorate the day the terror attack took place, reflecting on the impact it had on the community.

On a similar note, Minns blasted recent reports of a surge in attacks on Sydney’s Islamic community, including on a young girl in a head covering.

“I want to make it clear that any breaches of our racial vilification or hate speech laws apply to everyone,” he said.

“Police will throw the book at any examples of Islamophobia in our community.

“And can I just say from a moral perspective, it is disgusting to think that anyone could blame a young person, a young member of our community, a young Islamic girl for the actions of two people in Bondi Junction a couple of weeks ago.”
