For many working parents, balancing responsibilities can feel like a daunting task. Recent studies, however, have brought to light that children spending 40 hours weekly in childcare may face greater challenges in social and emotional development.
When children attend childcare centers deemed “low quality” for over 30 hours a week, they are increasingly at risk in at least one out of five key developmental areas.
The most significant effects were observed in social competence and emotional maturity, particularly when compared to peers not enrolled in formal childcare.
Experts suggest that one contributing factor might be frequent staff changes. Stable relationships with adults are crucial for healthy brain development in children, fostering a sense of security and attachment.
However, keeping children solely at home isn’t always the ideal solution.
In some cases, childcare can offer advantages, especially for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, single-parent families, or those who speak languages other than English at home.
The Albanese government expanded childcare support at the start of year with eligible families guaranteed three days of subsidised childcare per week.
While the help is welcomed by families, parent advocacy groups say there needs to be a stronger focus on boosting quality in the childcare sector, because reducing the hours of childcare is not an option for many working parents.
