A tragic accident occurred at Moffat Beach when a 17-year-old girl fell 30 meters from a cliff on Queen of Colonies Parade. The incident happened around 6:40 p.m. (7:40 p.m. AEDT) after she reportedly jumped over a safety barrier.
Despite the quick response of bystanders and paramedics, the girl succumbed to severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The teenager was with friends, enjoying the sunset, and had climbed over the railing to get a better view, according to reports.
Detective Acting Inspector Peter Hocken from Queensland Police stated, “She slipped and fell 30 meters onto the rocks below.”
He described the scene as distressing and emphasized the tragedy faced by those present, including off-duty medical staff who attempted to assist her.
“They did everything they could to help the young lady,” Hocken added.
“Unfortunately, she passed away on scene. Her injuries were quite severe.
“Life can be a bit unfair, especially at this time before Christmas.”
Another woman suffered minor injuries as she tried to help the teenager.
The rough terrain even caused firefighters to slip as they attempted to reach her.
Authorities warned visitors to stay clear of the fences when visiting lookouts.
“Especially this time of the year, but throughout the whole year, just please respect the barriers that are put in place,” Ryan Dubyk from Queensland Fire and Rescue said.
