At least 146 Palestinians lost their lives in recent Israeli air force attacks on Gaza within 24 hours, causing numerous injuries, reported local health authorities on Saturday. The Israeli military seems poised to continue with the new ground offensive.
These Israeli strikes since Thursday represent one of the deadliest bombardment phases since the truce fell apart in March.
US President Donald Trump, who wrapped up a Middle East tour on Friday without apparent strides towards a new ceasefire amid the intensified Israeli military campaign, acknowledged the worsening hunger crisis in Gaza and the necessity for aid deliveries.

“We have to help also out the Palestinians. You know, a lot of people are starving in Gaza, so we have to look at both sides,” he declared.

When asked if he backed Israel’s war plans, Trump said he expected “good things” over the next month.
Israel’s military said on Saturday it was conducting extensive strikes and mobilising troops as part of preparations to expand operations in the Gaza Strip and achieve “operational control” in areas of the Palestinian enclave.

According to Israel, their decision to halt aid to Gaza aims to compel concessions from the militant group Hamas, which continues to hold numerous Israeli hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attack that initiated the conflict.

United Nations experts warn that famine looms in Gaza after Israel started blocking aid deliveries to the strip 76 days ago, with UN aid chief Tom Fletcher asking the Security Council this week if it would act to “prevent genocide”.
The Gaza health system is barely operational, with hospitals hit repeatedly by the Israeli military during the 19-month war and medical supplies drying up as Israel tightened its blockade since March.

‘They were my sisters and daughters’

On the ground, at the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahia, AFPTV footage showed mourners crying over the bodies of their loved ones.
“They were innocent people,” said Mayar Salem. “Only their remains are left … They were my sisters and daughters.”
On Friday, Israel’s military ordered Gazans to move south after heavy strikes in the northern town of Beit Lahia and the Jabalia refugee camp.
Residents, however, said tanks were advancing towards the southern city of Khan Younis.

The military said that its forces had “struck over 150 terror targets throughout the Gaza Strip” in 24 hours.

The main Israeli campaign group representing the families of hostages said that by extending the fighting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was missing a “historic opportunity” to get their loved ones out through diplomacy.

The Tikva Forum, a rival group, advocated for increased military pressure “coordinated with diplomatic pressure, a complete siege, cutting off water and electricity”.

‘Deliberate starvation’

For weeks, UN agencies have warned of severe shortages in Gaza.

The 46-member Council of Europe said on Friday the territory was suffering from “deliberate starvation”.

And seven European countries, including five that have recognised a Palestinian state — Ireland, Iceland, Slovenia, Spain and Norway — issued a joint statement condemning what they called “the man-made humanitarian catastrophe that is taking place” and calling on Israel to halt military operations and lift the blockade.

In a statement of its own, Hamas said it “highly values the humanitarian and courageous stance” adopted by the seven countries.

after talks with Israeli officials.
On Thursday, the United Nations ruled out involvement with the initiative, citing concerns about “impartiality, neutrality [and] independence”.
Israel’s military campaign has devastated the tiny, crowded enclave, pushing nearly all its two million inhabitants from their homes and killing more than 53,000 people, according to Gaza health authorities.
