Australia had placed a ban on US beef imports for over 20 years following a bovine spongiform encephalopathy outbreak, or mad cow disease, which is known to cause fatal brain diseases in humans.

Whilst the blanket ban was lifted in 2019, a ban remained on cattle that had been raised in Canda and Mexico, but slaughtered in and exported from the US.

Employment Minister Amanda Rishworth explained the ban had been lifted after a decade-long review.

“A review was conducted, and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry now believes that adequate controls are in place in the US to lift that ban,” she mentioned on Today on Thursday.

Trump also used his Truth Social post to send a message to other countries that also had restrictions on US beef: “The other Countries that refuse our magnificent Beef are ON NOTICE”.

Will you buy beef imported from the US?
