Two members of the United States national guard were shot in Washington on Thursday morning near the White House, officials said.
The incident put the building into lockdown with US President Donald Trump away in Florida and drew a massive law enforcement response to the area.

In a recent update, Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Kash Patel clarified the status of two military personnel, stating that they are in critical condition following an earlier miscommunication that suggested they had been killed. This correction was made during a press briefing on Thursday.

West Virginia governor Patrick Morrisey initially said the troops — deployed to Washington from his state — had died, but later walked back that statement.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey took to social media platform X to acknowledge the conflicting reports regarding the condition of the guard members. He assured the public that further updates would be provided as more concrete information becomes available.

Meanwhile, authorities in Washington have confirmed that a suspect has been apprehended in relation to the incident. The police have also reported that the situation in the affected area is now under control, ensuring public safety and security.

Police in Washington said one suspect was in custody and that the area was secured.

Trump, whose policy of sending armed troops to support crime fighting in cities run by Democrats is deeply controversial, said in a statement that the two soldiers had been “critically wounded”.
Trump is at his resort in Palm Beach ahead of Thursday’s Thanksgiving holiday, while US Vice President JD Vance is in Kentucky.
The shooting unfolded near Farragut Square, a popular lunch spot for office workers just a few blocks away from the White House.
National guard troops have been in Washington since August, when Trump deployed them to the streets as part of what he said were efforts to crack down on crime.
This is a developing story and this article will be updated.
