Footage shows dangerous near-misses as cyclists, mobility scooter users and pedestrians risk their lives on NSW light rail tracks.
The CCTV footage comes from onboard light rail vehicles in Sydney’s CBD, the Eastern Suburbs, and Parramatta as well as in Newcastle.
One shot shows a delivery rider coasting along right next to a light rail vehicle, seemingly oblivious to the danger.
Others show cars and even a motorised scooter speeding across the tracks and almost being hit.
In another scene, a man steps out in front of a light rail train before being pulled back by another pedestrian grabbing his backpack, thus saving him from being struck.
There were more near-misses on the new Parramatta Light Rail system over the past 12 months than other lines, transport bosses say.
They are urging people to take care and follow road rules.
Minister for Transport John Graham mentioned that some of the footage is “difficult to watch,” with individuals being “centimeters or milliseconds away from a far worse outcome.”
CCTV of one incident showed a delivery rider straying onto the light rail tracks and pulling back right before the tram passes.
This week is the 20th annual Rail Safety Week.
