Rayner faces calls to prove she has been ‘cleared’ by HMRC over £40,000 bill

Angela Rayner recently encountered demands to demonstrate that she has been “cleared” by tax authorities just as she prepares to enter the Labour leadership contest.
Yesterday, the former deputy leader of Labour announced that HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) had exonerated her from any misconduct regarding her property purchase in Hove, East Sussex.
Although she had to pay £40,000 in overdue stamp duty for the seaside apartment, she reportedly managed to avoid incurring a penalty.
Experts and political competitors noted that such leniency might frustrate regular taxpayers, as HMRC typically imposes fines in similar situations.
Concerns were voiced over the tax authority’s decision not to label her actions as negligent, especially since she did not seek specialized tax guidance for the intricate transaction, which involved establishing a trust for her disabled son.
