Two adopted teenagers from Montana discovered they were biological sisters in an extraordinary twist: they met while playing for opposing softball teams.
Samantha Rensvold, 19, was competing in a softball tournament on August 1 when a teammate pointed out her remarkable resemblance to Kyann Dean, 18, who was playing for the rival team.
Rensvold already knew she had a younger biological sister, but because both adoptions were private, she had never learned the girl’s identity.
Although she also noticed the similarity, Rensvold decided against approaching Dean at first. She worried that assuming they were sisters could prove embarrassing if she was mistaken.
Rensvold told People she was “pretty much in denial,” thinking, “There’s no way that this would happen to me right now.”
After returning home, however, she told her mother what had happened. Together, they decided to check the tournament roster for more information.
They learned that the girl was named Kyann—and Rensvold’s mother recognized it as the name listed at birth for her daughter’s biological sister.
“So my mom was like, ‘That has to be your sister. That’s not a coincidence,’” Rensvold recalled.

At the sisters’ next game, their families spoke and confirmed that the teens’ birth mother had the same name and that both girls were born at the same hospital
When Dean and Rensvold attended their next softball game, their families began comparing details. They discovered that the teens’ biological mother had the same name and that both sisters had been born at the same hospital.
“There was no way we weren’t [sisters],” Rensvold told the outlet.
The families then organized a formal introduction between the sisters, and the emotional encounter was captured in a video obtained by Inside Edition.

In the video, Rensvold’s teammate tells Dean, “There’s a girl on my all-state team who looks just like you!”
The sisters smiled and exchanged an initially awkward handshake as their families laughed and celebrated around them. “We were just freaking out. We were just in tears, and it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh!’” Rensvold’s mother told Inside Edition.
Despite the slightly uncomfortable first meeting, the sisters soon grew more at ease as they spent time together and began learning about one another.
Rensvold told People that, despite growing up roughly 400 miles apart, she and Dean had both played high school volleyball in the same position. They shared another surprising connection: each wore jersey number six for her respective team.
Rensvold also said the sisters share the same “little giggle.”

The 19-year-old said that at the time of her birth, her biological mother was also 19 and her father was 17.
She said she assumes the reason her biological parents gave her up for adoption was that they ‘were too young and they wanted to give me a better life that maybe they couldn’t give me.’
Rensvold explained that she found out she had a sister from another biological sibling, a younger brother, who had tracked her down after he learned he had siblings.
‘What I don’t know is why they had two more [children] and then gave them both up for adoption,’ Rensvold said in regard to her biological parents.
At the moment, Dean attends college in North Dakota and Rensvold attends college in Washington State, so the sisters have not been able to see each other much in person, but they have been keeping in touch and hope to get together soon.
Rensvold said that meeting Dean and finally putting a face to the long-lost sister she knew she had has left her without ‘any doubt or wonder in my mind.’
