Presumptive left-wing New York congresswoman Darializa Avila-Chevalier condemned the NYPD and accused its officers of protecting a “militia” of immigration agents after a federal officer shot a suspected migrant gang member in The Bronx.
The incoming DSA House member published an almost 400-word social media post Friday criticizing police for managing crowds and clearing a path for ICE officers after the Marble Hill shooting.
“When I was in Marble Hill last night I saw NYPD officers rapidly escalating violence,” wrote Avila-Chevalier, the NY-13 congressional candidate endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
“As I was trying to de-escalate, I was shoved to the ground by an officer. I witnessed unmarked law enforcement cars hitting protestors as NYPD officers pushed people out of its path,” she claimed.
The far-left candidate also lashed out at Mamdani’s NYPD commissioner, Jessica Tisch, accusing her of violating city laws that restrict police cooperation with federal immigration authorities and demanding that she resign.
“Instead of condemning ICE’s violence, Police Commissioner Tisch attempted to justify the shooting by reading off our neighbor’s past interactions with police,” Avila-Chevalier said.

“The NYPD spent more time protecting a militia that just shot someone than protecting New Yorkers.”
She continued: “Last night, the NYPD and Commissioner Tisch violated the spirit, if not the letter, of our sanctuary city policies and fueled the Trump Administration’s attempt to demonize our communities.
“The NYPD’s Strategic Response Group must be disbanded as quickly as possible, and Commissioner Tisch must step down.”
Notably absent from the six-paragraph post was any criticism of Mamdani, who appointed Tisch as the city’s top police official and has the authority to remove her.
During his campaign, Mamdani pledged to disband the SRG, the NYPD unit that typically handles protests, including the demonstration that erupted Thursday night outside a hospital where 28-year-old Oscar Belgal was taken after being shot.
It was not immediately clear whether the SRG was deployed, or whether other police units responded, before ICE agents took Belgal, a Dominican Republic national, away in a vehicle bound for a federal immigration detention facility in New Jersey.
Mamdani has so far declined to disband the SRG.
