Half our petrol supply riding on PM's trip to Asian neighbour
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has touched down in Singapore, talking up the chances of a deal to lock in supply from the country that already ships half of Australia‘s petrol.

The swift convening of a meeting, prompted by ongoing concerns over Iran’s effective blockade of a pivotal shipping passage, is being framed as an opportunity to secure gas supplies in exchange for oil. This gathering is seen as crucial in addressing the energy supply chain disruptions caused by the tensions in the region.

Jennifer Parker, an expert associate at the Australian National University’s National Security College, expressed skepticism regarding the immediate resumption of normal ship traffic through the strait. She highlighted the necessity for greater clarity on Iran’s expectations from the vessels navigating the international waters before a return to routine operations can occur.

“Vessels are unlikely to set a precedent by notifying a coastal state when traversing an international strait,” Parker commented to 9News. “There’s a need for assurance that, should Iran resume hostilities, there would be a tangible response from the US.”

She added that it might take a while for shipping volumes to normalize in the strait, as stakeholders await both a stable ceasefire and a clearer understanding of the geopolitical dynamics at play.
