Flagler County paramedic found guilty of sexual battery, state attorney says

In a troubling case that has drawn significant attention, James Melady, a former paramedic from Flagler County, Florida, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars. This solemn verdict comes after Melady was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious patient in the back of an ambulance.

The incident, which took place on October 17, 2021, involved a woman who was “unresponsive and intoxicated.” Melady, 37, was on duty when he received the call to transport her to a local hospital. Disturbingly, the evidence presented in court included two videos that showed Melady setting up a recording device and committing the reprehensible act while performing his duties.

The case reached its legal conclusion in December 2025, more than four years after the crime occurred, culminating in Monday’s sentencing. While Melady faced charges of both sexual battery and digital voyeurism, he was acquitted of the latter.

This case underscores the severe breach of trust and professional ethics, as Melady was entrusted with the care of vulnerable individuals. The sentence serves as a solemn reminder of the responsibilities held by those in positions of care and authority, and the grave consequences when that trust is violated.

The report says that two videos of Melady depicted him setting up a recording device and “clearly committing the acts during a call for service and during the course of his duties.”

Although he was charged with sexual battery and digital voyeurism, Melady was found not guilty of the second charge.

“The defendant was a first responder who raped an unconscious patient when he was supposed to be providing her with proper medical care,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said after the sentencing. “His crime was disgusting, demented, and deserving of the maximum sentence permissible by law.”

In addition to his prison sentence, Melady will be required to register as a sex offender and undergo five years of probation upon release.

Melady has other charges pending in two unrelated cases out of two separate counties. In Flagler County, he is accused of victimizing multiple other patients by stealing their credit cards and identification.
