I visited the world's first Ikea Hotel - here's what shocked me most

A British travel enthusiast recently ventured to the world’s first IKEA hotel, anticipating a unique experience, but found himself somewhat disappointed due to the absence of an essential amenity.

Dave, known as @mrtravelon on social media, documented his stay at the homeware company’s new hotel in Las Palma, Gran Canaria, on 28 June.

This two-star establishment, called Las Dunas de Santa Catalina Boutique House, began welcoming guests in early June and provides an exclusive, adults-only setting.

Situated close to Alcaravaneras beach, the hotel comprises 27 rooms, boasts a pool, offers picturesque garden views, and features rooms with contemporary interiors that subtly avoid heavy IKEA branding.

Managed by Sarton Canarias, the archipelago franchise group, prices at Spain’s first IKEA hotel start from around £114 per night, including breakfast.

In a recently-posted video, content creator Dave gave his 174,000 followers a detailed look into his stay at the hotel that’s fully decked out in IKEA style – both inside and out.

He commented: ‘It is just amazing, with the inside all decorated with IKEA, and the outside having all garden furniture around a beautiful pool that just lights up the evening.

‘The sunbeds are all IKEA here, which is what the novelty is all about. It’s such a cool idea.

As he entered his room, Dave was ‘amazed’ that it had been styled exactly like an IKEA showroom.

He highlighted the IKEA-branded double bed, rug, lighting, and even the desk – a recognisable piece from the company’s catalogue.

He also gave props to the room’s air-conditioning, fridge, and a modern walk-in shower in the bathroom, complete with plush pink IKEA towels.

Other standouts for Dave included a Krups coffee machine, a large fluffy blanket, and a private terrace overlooking the pool. He exclaimed: ‘That’s madness.’

In a follow-up video, Dave returned to showcase the hotel’s included continental breakfast – served, of course, on IKEA plates with IKEA cutlery.

He said: ‘It’s IKEA plates, IKEA cutlery – it’s IKEA everything. The continental breakfast is included in the price… you get all your coffee… and what a place to enjoy breakfast, just sitting and looking over the pool from your table.’

Showing off a boards filled with cold meats and cheeses, along with a bowl filled with strawberries, blueberries, dragon fruit, raspberries, and blackberries, he said: ‘This has to be one of the healthiest breakfasts I have ever had.

‘Fresh strawberries, blueberries, dragon fruit, raspberries – which you don’t normally see in the Canary Islands – and blackberries as well. It’s beautiful.’

Despite his glowing review, Dave admitted there was one thing missing: IKEA’s iconic Swedish meatballs.

He said: ‘There’s only one thing that it’s missing: meatballs, gravy and hotdogs. If they put that on the menu – I’d be right in there.’

One fan joked, ‘Did you have to assemble the room before staying?’ while another poked, ‘The catch is you have to assemble the bed yourself before you stay – it all comes flat packed.’
