A Georgia police officer is recovering after a suspect shot him in the face during a suspicious vehicle call, according to officials.

Timothy Craig Ramsey, 26, was arrested for allegedly shooting McCaysville police Capt. Brantley Worley on Friday night. Chief Michael Earley reported that officers were responding to a call about a suspicious person along First Street shortly after 11 p.m. Upon the officers’ arrival, Ramsey allegedly opened fire, “brutally” shooting the officer in the face, as Earley mentioned in an interview with Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB.

The shooting initiated an extensive manhunt involving local, state, and federal authorities searching for Ramsey. Police initially attempted to arrest him at his home early Saturday morning, but he was not there. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued a “Blue Alert” on Saturday, seeking the public’s assistance in locating Ramsey. Police received a tip regarding Ramsey’s location, leading to his arrest around 6 p.m. Saturday.

Ramsey is accused of aggravated assault with the intent to murder a police officer. Neighbors informed Atlanta News First that Ramsey was perceived as “aggressive and violent” and had previously shot out a neighbor’s windows, suspecting the person was responsible for his cat’s death.

Capt. Worley, promoted in July and with three years at McCaysville police, has about 15 years of law enforcement experience. The bullet fractured his neck and led to brain bleeding, according to Earley.

“Captain Worley is a dedicated officer who has faithfully served this community, and we ask everyone to keep him, his family, and our department in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time,” Earley stated.

McCaysville is a small town located in northern Georgia on the border with Tennessee.
