On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron re-appointed Sebastien Lecornu as prime minister, just days following his resignation. Macron tasked him with forming a government again and creating a budget to address the nation’s political impasse.

Lecornu’s re-appointment came after prolonged negotiations and was less than a week after his resignation due to disputes within his newly established government.

Currently, France is grappling with increasing economic difficulties and soaring debt. The ongoing political crisis is exacerbating these issues and causing concern throughout the European Union.

Lecornu is now tasked with finding compromises to prevent an immediate vote of no confidence, and he may need to reconsider the highly unpopular pension reform, a key policy of Macron’s second presidential term.

Rammed through parliament without a vote in 2023 despite mass protests, it gradually raises the retirement age from 62 to 64.

Opposition parties want it to be scrapped.

The political deadlock stems from Macron’s shock decision in June 2024 to dissolve the National Assembly.

The snap elections produced a hung parliament, with no bloc able to command a majority in the 577-seat chamber.

The gridlock has unnerved investors, infuriated voters, and stalled efforts to curb France’s spiraling deficit and public debt.

Without reliable support, Macron’s administrations have consistently faced crises, faltering while trying to gather approval for unpopular budget cuts.

Lecornu’s resignation, occurring just 14 hours post-Cabinet announcement, highlighted the precariousness of the president’s coalition, troubled by profound political and personal conflicts.
