Harold Greene, the beloved Los Angeles news anchor who spent decades reporting breaking news to Southern California viewers, has died at 82.
The Emmy-winning broadcaster became a familiar presence in LA homes during nearly 20 years at ABC7. His family said he died Tuesday night.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Harold passed away last night. My mom and I were by his side, and there was an extraordinary amount of love in the room,” his daughter, Courtney Greene, said.
“We have a feeling he’s already settling into the great newsroom in the sky, no doubt with a few suggestions on how things should be run. He was so very loved, and we know he will be missed by many,” she added.
According to ABC7, Greene launched his journalism career in 1970 as a producer and reporter at the station. He later worked in San Diego and San Francisco before returning to Los Angeles.
After rejoining ABC7 in 1982, Greene anchored the network’s 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts until 2000.

The legendary broadcaster later worked at KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV before retiring in 2008.
Over the course of his career, Greene received several Emmy Awards, Golden Mike Awards and Edward R. Murrow Awards. He was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
His wife did not disclose additional details about Greene’s death. She asked people to honor his memory by “sharing pictures and memories” and said a memorial service would take place after the holidays.
Greene’s death comes just two years after the passing of another prominent Los Angeles news anchor, Chauncy Glover.
Glover, a three-time Emmy Award-winning anchor who worked for KCAL News, died at 39 in November 2024.
His cause of death was not initially disclosed. It was later determined that he died from acute intoxication in what was ruled an accidental death.
