Israel Expels Australian PA Diplomats in Response to Banning of Visiting Politician

On Monday, the Israeli government revealed its decision to expel Australian diplomats assigned to the Palestinian Authority, residing in Israel, in response to Australia’s prohibition of an Israeli politician’s visit.

According to News reports, Australia revoked the visa of Simcha Rothman, a prominent right-wing member of Israel’s Knesset, who was planning a visit to support the Jewish community there.

Rothman’s conservative viewpoints are well-established within Israel’s political mainstream. The Australian government cited several reasons for the denial, including his advocacy for prevailing in the conflict, promoting Israeli control over contested regions, and rejecting Israeli culpability for the conflict. These stances are commonplace in Israel, leading even the political opposition in Israel to criticize Australia’s decision.

In retaliation, Israel plans to effectively expel Australia’s Palestinian representatives and will implement stricter scrutiny of Australian visitors, as reported by Amit Segal of Israel’s Channel 12.

Additionally, Israel is contemplating shutting down the Jerusalem consular offices of several nations, like Australia, that have chosen to recognize Palestinian statehood, even as Hamas continues holding Israeli hostages.

Under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the Australian Labor government has taken a more adversarial stance towards Israel, influenced by pressure from newly immigrated Muslim communities and far-left factions.

Meanwhile, Jewish communities have suffered a series of antisemitic attacks, including the firebombing of a synagogue in Melbourne during prayers, which forced the worshippers inside to flee for their own safety.
