LIVE: Opening statements begin in trial for 4 suspects charged in Jacksonville rapper Foolio's murder

The courtroom drama unfolds in Tampa, Florida, as the trial begins for four individuals accused of murdering Jacksonville rapper Foolio. The accused—Isaiah Chance, Sean Gathright, Davion Murphy, and Rashad Murphy—are facing first-degree murder charges, along with additional allegations, related to this high-profile case.

The trial commenced on Wednesday with opening statements that set the stage for what promises to be a closely watched legal battle. Each of the four suspects is implicated in the tragic death of Foolio, a figure whose life and career were cut short in a violent act.

Complicating the case further is the involvement of a fifth suspect, Alicia Andrews. Convicted of manslaughter in a separate trial held in October 2025, Andrews awaits sentencing. Prosecutors argued that Andrews played a critical role as a lookout, assisting her boyfriend, Isaiah Chance, in monitoring Foolio’s movements the night he was fatally shot.

Foolio, born Charles Jones, was just 26 years old when he was ambushed and killed outside a Holiday Inn in Tampa in June 2024. The attack occurred while he was celebrating his birthday, a moment that should have been filled with joy but instead ended in tragedy.

Jones was not only a rising star in the rap scene but also a notable figure within a Jacksonville gang, a background that has added layers of complexity to the investigation and trial proceedings. As the courtroom proceedings continue, the eyes of many remain fixed on the unfolding case, eager for justice and answers.

Foolio’s death

Foolio, whose real name is Charles Jones, was 26 years old when he was ambushed and shot to death outside of a Tampa Holiday Inn in June 2024. The rapper had been celebrating his birthday at the time.

Jones was a well-known, prominent member of a Jacksonville gang.

State attorneys called his murder premeditated stemming from an “ongoing gang war.”

Several of the defendants being tried are documented members or “associates” of rival gangs often linked to each other.

While Chance is accused of helping track Jones’ movements the night he was killed, Gathright, Davion and Rashad Murphy are accused of shooting and killing Jones.
