CHICAGO (WLS) — Overnight storms pummeled the Chicago area with heavy rains, leading to flooded roads and continuing downpours in some regions on Sunday morning.

According to ABC7 Chicago AccuWeather Meteorologist Jaisol Martinez, from Saturday evening through the night, certain areas in Chicago received between 2 to 5 inches of rain.

A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for for Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall and Will counties until 7:15 a.m., the National Weather Service said.

ComEd said as of 6:52 a.m., 70,193 customers were without power.

Floodwaters have submerged a viaduct near West 47th Street and South Archer Avenue in Chicago’s Archer Heights neighborhood, stranding several vehicles on Sunday morning.

Heavy rain is causing flash flooding issues in the Chicago area on Sunday.

ABC7 was on the scene as drivers tried to get through the floodwaters. At least four cars were stuck there at 5:30 a.m.

ABC7 captured footage as a tow truck rescued a car from the water at another viaduct located near East 95th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue. As of 6:30 a.m., two cars with their occupants remained stuck there.

Other cars were seen driving on the sidewalk to get around the water.

Earlier on Sunday, Illinois State Police reported that flooding had temporarily closed the Stevenson Expressway in both directions at Pulaski. The expressway has now been reopened.

This all comes after storms blew through on Saturday, causing plenty of damage.

The northwest suburbs bore the brunt of the storm’s impact, particularly in Mount Prospect and Des Plaines, where severe weather conditions led to the roof being torn off an apartment building.

Rain and storms continued south of Interstate 88 at 5:45 a.m., but damaging wind is no longer a threat.

Storms are expected to hit the Chicago area’s most southern counties between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., and the rest of the day is expected to be dry.

Martinez said the weather should clear out in time for day two of the Chicago Air & Water Show, and it should stay that way for the Chicago Bears game.
