Long Island football coach hurls helmet at teen player's face 'like a dart' in bloody scene: family

A Long Island assistant football coach allegedly hurled a helmet at a 16-year-old varsity player’s face “like a dart,” leaving the teenager bleeding, in need of stitches and facing evaluation for a possible concussion, according to the boy’s family.

The alleged incident happened during a summer football practice on Aug. 26 at Commack High School. Suffolk County police confirmed to The Post that they are investigating an altercation involving a player and a coach.

The assistant coach, described as a school board-approved volunteer and the son of the team’s head coach, threw the helmet as the teen was getting up from the bench, the player’s parents told News 12.

“He saw the coach grab his helmet, running up to him… and threw the helmet, he said overhand, I guess like a dart, really hard…” the boy’s mother, Laura Werner, told the station.

“The face mask hit him and cut him. He was bleeding all over the place.”

The alleged blow sent the Commack High School football player to the hospital, where he received three stitches beneath his right eye, News 12 reported.

The teen is also undergoing evaluation for a possible concussion, according to the report.

No arrests had been made as of Monday.

The boy’s parents accused the nepo assistant coach of being unqualified.

“My son had somebody that was not a certified coach or trainer, a volunteer, and his health, well-being and safety was put at risk,” the teen’s dad Cary Werner said, according to News 12. “And I think there were some things that slipped through the cracks.”

The Post reached out to the boy’s parents, who didn’t respond as of Monday afternoon.

Commack School District officials likewise had not yet responded to a request for comment.

Several football players told The Post that had witnessed the helmet toss but couldn’t say if the coach intended to chuck it at the teenager.
