DONALD Trump has selected Fox News star Jeanine Pirro to be a top prosecutor in Washington DC.
The president has named Pirro, known for her role on The Five, as the interim US attorney for the District of Columbia, noting she is in a “class of her own.”
In a Truth Social post, Trump described Pirro as a powerful crusade for the victims of crime.
“Jeanine is exceptionally qualified for this role, regarded as one of the leading District Attorneys in New York State’s history,” he stated.
Pirro, 73, has previously served as a judge and district attorney in Westchester County, New York.
She joined Fox News in 2006 where she was the host of the show Justice with Judge Jeanine for more than a decade.
Pirro has appeared on the round-table opinion show The Five since 2022.
The Five is the most-watched TV show on cable news.
Fox News chiefs have wished Pirro well in her new role.
“Jeanine Pirro has been a fantastic addition to The Five over the past three years and a cherished host throughout FOX News Media. Her contributions have been significant to our success during her 14-year stint,” they commented.
“We wish her all the best in her new role in Washington.”
Pirro will have to be confirmed in the Senate before she assumes the role.
Former Fox News stars Pete Hegseth and Sean Duffy serve as Secretary of Defense and Transportation respectively.
Senior Republican lawmakers have welcomed Pirro’s selection.
“I am beyond pleased with President Trump’s decision to make Jeanine Pirro the interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia,” senator Lindsey Graham wrote on X.
“She is exactly the right person at the right time to take on this responsibility.
“She brings to the table wide and deep legal experience combined with a passion for justice and a determination to protect law abiding citizens from criminal predators.”
Graham said Pirro’s nomination marks a “bad day” for criminals.
Pirro has not shared a statement on social media, but did re-post a message from Sergio Gor, Trump’s hiring manager.
“Congratulations Judge Jeanine who will soon make DC Great Again,” the note said.
