ORLANDO, Fla – The Orlando music community is on edge following the detention of “Uncle Lou” Arguello, a beloved figure known for his significant contributions to the local music scene. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have taken Arguello into custody, a move that has sparked concern among musicians and fans who appreciate his role in giving emerging bands their first opportunities on stage.
The Orange County Incarcerations page identifies Cleon Ortille Williams, 62, as having been booked on May 9, with an immigration hold in place but without any formal charges listed. This development has left the community seeking clarity and answers.
Originating from Jamaica, Arguello transformed Uncle Lou’s Entertainment Hall into a hub for Orlando’s burgeoning punk, hardcore, and experimental music scenes. After opening the venue on Michigan Avenue in 2005, he relocated it to Mills Avenue in 2006, where it has since welcomed bands from all corners of the globe.
In response to the situation, community members have been actively voicing their support for Arguello and are calling for transparency regarding his detention. Their posts reflect a widespread concern for his well-being and the future of the music venue he nurtured.
State Representative Anna V. Eskamani took to Facebook to express her intention to uncover more information about Arguello’s situation. She confirmed that Arguello is currently held in the Orange County Jail without criminal charges, under an ICE hold, suggesting that he might soon be transferred to an ICE facility. Highlighting Arguello’s importance to the Orlando indie music scene, Eskamani has requested anyone with further insights to reach out to her via email.
This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
