Flu and COVID vaccines: What you need to know this season

Flu season has arrived, marking a crucial time for individuals to take preventive measures. Nurse practitioner Karen Kitchens from CVS MinuteClinic recently shared insights on the importance of receiving this year’s flu and COVID-19 vaccines.

Typically, flu season spans from November to May, with an expected peak in February. The flu vaccine is recommended for most individuals aged 18 months and older, offering essential protection. It is particularly vital for those over 65 or those under 65 with underlying health conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol issues, or heart disease. Clinics have already begun encountering flu cases and are actively treating affected patients.

A common misconception is that the flu shot can cause the flu, but this is not the case. Any mild symptoms like fatigue or redness at the injection site are normal reactions, indicating the body is building its defense mechanisms. The same rationale applies to COVID-19 vaccinations. Staying current with vaccinations is crucial, given the evolving nature of these viruses.

In Georgia, vaccines are readily accessible, and no prescription is necessary to receive them. Additionally, adopting simple safety practices, such as remaining at home when feverish, coughing into one’s elbow, and wearing a mask if unwell, can significantly contribute to community protection.

For those with inquiries or concerns about vaccinations, visiting a clinic for personalized advice is highly recommended.
