Tragedy as National Park ranger fatally falls from Alaskan mountain

A tragic accident claimed the life of a National Park Service ranger while she was on duty atop a picturesque mountain in Alaska.

Robin Pendery suffered a fatal fall into a crevasse on Mount McKinley, as reported by officials on Thursday afternoon.

During a routine climbing patrol, the Washington state resident took a fall near the 14,000-foot camp on the mountain, which towers approximately 20,000 feet above sea level. The incident occurred around 2 p.m.

At the time of the accident, Pendery was assisting in managing the camp alongside another ranger. The National Park Service staff responded to the situation without delay.

Despite their swift rescue efforts, the ranger could not be saved from the tragic accident.

Currently, the unfortunate incident is under investigation, and authorities have not disclosed further details at this time.

‘We are heartbroken by the loss of a member of our Denali family,’ Superintendent Brooke Merrell said in a statement.

‘Our mountaineering rangers dedicate themselves to serving visitors and helping others in one of the most challenging environments in the world.

‘Today, we mourn the loss of a valued colleague, friend and teammate. Our thoughts are with Robin’s family and loved ones,’ she added.

Pendery has worked at the Denali National Park and Preserve since 2024, and she was alongside another ranger when she fell

Pendery had served as a seasonal mountaineering ranger at Denali National Park and Preserve since 2024.

The ranger devoted her work to emergency response, ensuring climber safety, and managing high-altitude operations on North America’s highest peak, the agency said.

Tributes flooded social media for Pendery, as people mourned the tragic loss.

‘Robin was my guide for several climbs early in my mountaineering career and she helped shaped who I am in the mountains,’ one person wrote on Instagram.

‘Tough, kind, capable, and always so stoked. Giving me confidence that women not only had a place in this world, but could be leaders. Sending so much love to her community, this is heartbreaking,’ they continued.

Another user wrote a heartfelt tribute about the ranger: ‘I can’t hold back my tears. She was the one who presented me with my Denali Pro Patch last year, and she was one of the Denali Rangers I admired and respected the most.

‘My thoughts and prayers are with her family and the entire Denali Ranger community during this difficult time,’ they added.

In June 2025, a 29-year-old skier died on the same mountain after triggering an avalanche during his descent.

Nicholas Vizzini, also from Washington state, was with an unnamed climbing partner on Tuesday when they accidentally caused the crisis on Mount McKinley at over 16,000 ft.

The mountain was the subject of an intensive search after the two became trapped under heavy snow.

Rangers responded to the mountain within minutes after Vizzini’s partner was spotted in debris from the avalanche.

They were then able to detect a beacon signal to find Vizzini, who was found buried under the debris.

Despite lifesaving efforts from first responders, he was pronounced dead on Tuesday evening and his body was transferred to the state medical examiner’s office. His partner sustained only minor injuries.
