Young offenders have chased a police car through a suburb in Western Australia’s Kimberley region in a bizarre police pursuit.
A Nissan Patrol attempted to ram two police vehicles in Kununurra on Monday night, WA Police said.
9News understands children were behind the wheel of the vehicle.
“Regrettably, two nights ago in Kununurra we had a stolen Nissan Patrol which attempted to ram two police vehicles,” Chris Dawson, WA Police Commissioner, told 6PR.
Last week, Operation Regional Shield launched in an attempt to minimise youth crime across the Kimberley region after a recent spike.
More police officers and operational police assets have been deployed to help control the situation.
“We’ve put a lot of extra effort in there to arrest that sort of behaviour,” Mr Dawson said.
Street crime was a focus, with burglaries dropping from 24 to five in Broome in a week.
Police have identified a disturbing social media trend, popularised on TikTok, which encourages young people to better one another by increasing the volume and seriousness of criminal offending.
“We’ve got other young ones who are videoing themselves, putting it on TikTok and seeing this as a game, it’s very sad, but we have to call it what it is, it’s criminal offending,” Mr Dawson said.
The police operation is on a scale not previously seen in regional Western Australia, targeting the ringleaders of violent crime to suppress and disrupt further juvenile offending.
