Five people were killed after a gunman opened fire from a vehicle at a popular tourist site in Krakow, Poland, on Saturday.
At least 12 others, including two police officers, were injured in the shooting, which took place in the city’s Main Market Square at about 3 p.m. local time.
One of the officers, believed to have confronted the attacker, was shot three times and remains in “very critical condition” while undergoing surgery.
Emergency crews, including an air ambulance, raced to the scene as a major police operation was launched across the square.
Video footage appears to show an armed officer approaching a person believed to be the shooter. The man is seen lying on the ground wearing green, military-style clothing.
He also appeared to be wearing a helmet and body armour. Police said the attacker was armed with a military-style rifle.
The officer, who was carrying a firearm, can be heard firing as many as six shots. He is later shown collapsed on the ground after also being wounded. His condition has not been confirmed.
Police said the suspect had begun “firing at random people from his car” before armed officers shot him and made an arrest.
Authorities said they were not searching for any other suspects and identified the arrested man as a Polish national.
