LOS ANGELES — A dramatic pursuit unfolded Monday afternoon as a suspect led California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers on a high-speed chase from Los Angeles to the U.S.-Mexico border, where the suspect ultimately crossed into Mexico, authorities reported.

The incident began around 11:15 a.m. in the San Fernando Valley. Officials stated that the suspect, experiencing a mental health crisis, had taken a minivan and embarked on the southward journey. The suspect’s mother informed the CHP of the situation.

Believed to be a woman, the driver predominantly traveled along the southbound 405 Freeway, making her way through Orange County. She then transitioned to the southbound 5 Freeway and continued onto the south 805 Freeway, eventually reaching the border crossing into Mexico.

CHP officers decided to terminate the pursuit just before 1:30 p.m. as the suspect crossed the international boundary.

Throughout the chase, authorities made several attempts to end the pursuit using spike strips. Despite deploying at least four of them, the suspect skillfully avoided each one by maneuvering around them.

During one attempt to halt the vehicle, officers stopped traffic on the 5 Freeway in the Oceanside area and attempted to deploy a spike strip. Unfortunately, it failed to function correctly, allowing the suspect to continue her escape.
