A man was fatally shot by Jacksonville police officers on Wednesday, following suspicions of his involvement in an earlier murder on the Westside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. The incident unfolded in the Mandarin area, specifically on Julington Creek Road near Sand Ridge Drive.

The suspect, who had been linked to a morning shooting at approximately 5:30 a.m., was accused of killing a woman and injuring another individual. Investigators quickly identified him as a person of interest and uncovered that he was already wanted on a theft charge. While authorities did not immediately release his name, they noted that he was a man in his 50s.

Detectives tracked the suspect to Julington Creek Road by 1 p.m. with plans to arrest him on the outstanding warrant. Officers attempted to intercept his vehicle there. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office confirmed that, despite the tense situation, all officers involved were unharmed.

This chain of events has gripped the Jacksonville community, highlighting the serious nature of the situation and the swift action taken by law enforcement. As the investigation continues, more details are expected to come to light.

The suspect was identified by investigators shortly thereafter and it was discovered that he had an active warrant for his arrest on a theft charge. He was not immediately publicly identified, but the sheriff’s office described him as a man in his 50s.

Police planned to arrest him on the warrant, and tracked him to Julington Creek Road at around 1 p.m., where officers attempted to block his vehicle.

JSO said that the man pointed a gun at officers and shot at them at least once. Five officers then opened fire, striking and killing the man.

The sheriff’s office said that the investigation remains active.
