Chilling reason mom gave for shooting dead two of her children

A distressed Texas mother, accused of fatally shooting her two children, reportedly told police she had to ‘eliminate them all’ before they could harm her, as per court documents.

Oninda Romelus, 31, allegedly killed her 13-year-old son and three-year-old daughter on Saturday morning, subsequently contacting police and showing up at a Shell gas station in Angleton.

When officers arrived at the scene they were not quite sure what they were responding to, but then absolute horror took over.

Authorities discovered her Audi Sedan with its doors open and saw her four children inside, with some partially covered by a white sheet, according to court records cited by ABC13.

The teenage son was found in the passenger seat with gunshot injuries. Deputies also observed three other children in the backseat who had been shot, according to records.

The two surviving children, an eight-year-old boy and a nine-year-old girl, are now stable after being flown to a local hospital, according to the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office.

During an interview at the county jail, Oninda, known for her appearance as a teen mom on Paternity Court TV in 2013, stated to officers: ‘Rather than them doing it to me, I’m doing it to them.’

An investigator then clarified: ‘Do what?’ as Oninda replied, ‘Kill them all,’ per the records.

During her conversation with police, Romelus also appeared paranoid as she was caught looking toward the door on multiple occasions, according to court records.

She also told investigators that she should she was calling the ‘devil,’ not 911, the Houston Chronicle reported.

One investigator said what she told them ‘didn’t make sense’ a lot of the time. She managed to name her kids and give their ages, adding ‘They were with the devil,’ when Romelus was asked where they were.

Romelus has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She remains in jail on a $14 million bond.

Investigators said they believe the children were shot inside the car at another unknown location before Romelus drove to the gas station.

After the gruesome discovery, investigators made their way to Romelus’ home in Montgomery County.

A neighbor who preferred to remain anonymous said the community is very shaken up over the incident.

‘It’s just heartbreaking,’ they told the outlet. ‘I just want to cry. It breaks my heart because there’s just… there’s no reason for it.’

The local said they used to see two of the four children walking in and out of the home almost everyday.

‘[The] 13-year-old looked like a sweet young man taking care of his little sister, walking her home every day,’ they added.

‘It’s going to be hard when we sit out in the afternoon not to see him bringing his little sister home and waving at them and telling him to be careful and have a good day.’

The tragedy came about a decade after Romelus appeared on Paternity Court TV to ask for help determining who was the father of one of her children.

Romelus claimed she had cheated on her fiancé of four years, DeWayne Seymore, and thus did not know which of the two men was her child’s father. It later emerged that neither of the two men was the child’s dad.

The child whose paternity was in question, named O’Karreo, would now be the same age as the child who was shot dead, but officials told the Daily Mail they will not be releasing the victim’s names out of respect for their family.

Seymore was convicted in 2017 of being part of a gang who kidnapped a prosecutor’s father, as reported by 11 Alive.

‘I cheated him basically out of spite,’ Romelus explained after claiming Seymore had been first to cheat on her.

A DNA test determined that neither Seymore nor the other man, Jeremy Covington, were O’Karreo’s father.

Romelus worked as a tax agent and was originally from Haiti. She had recently moved to Texas from Georgia with her children.

James Chappell said he is the grandfather of the three-year-old girl who was shot dead, and he identified her as Amari Chappell.

Chappell, who is also the grandfather of the injured eight-year-old boy, said his son, their father, is currently in prison.

‘She had a beautiful smile, just like her dad,’ Chappell told Click 2 Houston of little Amari.

‘I started crying immediately,’ he said about hearing the tragic news of the shooting. ‘That’s my grandbaby.’

Chappell added that he ‘didn’t see anything wrong with [Romelus’] personality before the alleged shooting.

‘She seemed like a beautiful person,’ said Chappell. ‘She had a wonderful job and everything.’
