Tony Romo Arrested After Mugshot Shows NFL Legend Smirking at Camera

Tony Romo, the former NFL star quarterback who now serves as a lead analyst for CBS, was arrested Thursday in Milwaukee.

The ex-Dallas Cowboys signal-caller was booked on suspicion of operating while under the influence, or OWI, according to Milwaukee booking records reviewed by the Daily Mail. Authorities have not yet clarified what type of vehicle Romo was operating at the time.

Romo, 46, appeared to smirk while looking directly into the camera for his mugshot following his booking by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

The former quarterback was reportedly stopped at about 6 p.m. on a high-rise bridge while heading south on I-43.

Romo, who is paid $18 million annually for his work calling NFL games on CBS, allegedly struggled during multiple field sobriety tests before officers took him into custody.

He has since been released from jail and is scheduled to appear in court on September 21. Records indicate this was his first OWI offense.

Police said the incident remains under investigation with no criminal charges filed.

In Wisconsin, a first-offense OWI is generally a civil offense, not a criminal charge. The citation typically carries a fine ranging from $150 to $300.

CBS did not immediately respond to the Daily Mail’s request for comment.

Romo spent his entire 13-season NFL career with the Cowboys, leading Dallas to four postseason appearances as the team’s starting quarterback between 2006 to 2015.

However, despite earning four Pro Bowl nods during his time on the field, Romo failed to make it to the Super Bowl, never advancing past the divisional round.

He lost his starting position to then-rookie Dak Prescott in 2016, retiring from football at the end of that season.

After hanging up his cleats, Romo went on to become the lead color analyst for NFL on CBS. He will be entering his 10th season as a sportscaster this fall.

The retired signal caller, who famously dated Jessica Simpson from 2007 to 2009, is married to Candice Crawford Romo, a former broadcast journalist and past Miss Missouri. They share three children.

Romo, who grew up in Burlington, Wisconsin, is believed to have been in the Milwaukee area for the Wisconsin Amateur Championship.

The Cowboys icon has competed in the annual golf tournament for multiple years at West Bend Country Club, which is located around 37 miles outside of Milwaukee.

However, he tumbled down the leaderboard, finishing tied for 73rd after shooting a score of 35-over across the four rounds.

The fourth and final round of the tournament took place on Thursday hours before Romo’s arrest.

‘I’m competitive in both, I’m just better at football,’ he told TMJ4 News during the tournament. ‘It’s the challenge of it. It’s as tough as your gonna play.’

Romo graduated from Burlington High School, south of Milwaukee and West Bend Country Club.

He was the first student athlete at the school to be named all-state in three sports –  football, basketball and golf.

The Burlington Area School District later named a field former NFL star in February 2020.

Romo’s arrest comes almost a year after his fellow former quarterback and analyst Mark Sanchez was detained for allegedly attacking a truck driver.

The former New York Jets quarterback is facing multiple criminal charges after being accused of assaulting 69-year-old Perry Tole in Indianapolis back in October.

During an alleged near-fatal brawl with Tole, Sanchez, 39, suffered multiple stab wounds to his upper right torso.

The ex-signal caller – who was fired from his job as a Fox Sports analyst – may have been under the influence of cocaine, fentanyl, marijuana and alcohol , according to a document filed by Tole’s attorneys in a related federal lawsuit.

Sanchez, who has been married to wife Perry Mattfeld since 2023, faces counts of felony battery as well as misdemeanor public intoxication and unauthorized entry of a vehicle.

The former Jets first-round draft pick was in Indianapolis to cover the Colts’ game against the Las Vegas Raiders for Fox the following day when the altercation with Tole occurred.

After briefly being booked into jail upon his release from hospital, he was fired by the network in early November.
