NEW YORK (WABC) — Crews were out treating roads across the Tri-State area overnight in preparation for the first significant snowfall of the season.

In New York City, about 700 sanitation trucks were out spreading salt ahead of the snow’s arrival.

“We are ready to meet the storm head-on. This is where we are as a city. This city is prepared because of the professionals that are here,” Mayor Eric Adams said on Sunday.

The omicron variant of COVID-19 continues to impact lives, with approximately 20% of DSNY workers calling out sick.

They remaining crews are being asked to extend their hours to make up for the staffing shortage.

“We have been preparing for winter since last winter,” said DSNY Commissioner Ed Greyson.

New York City Emergency Management has issued a travel advisory for Monday.

New Jersey is expected to take the brunt of this winter storm, particularly the southern counties.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from late Sunday night through Monday afternoon for those southern areas.

On Sunday, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy issued a state of emergency in four counties ahead of the storm.

He asked drivers in those areas to stay off the roads this morning.

“Folks if you can, based on who you work for and your working circumstance, if you can sit the commute out and delay that a little bit in the morning, that’s probably a smart move, not just for you but for the whole operation,” he said.

Amtrak is canceling trains ahead of the inclement weather.

New Jersey Transit was expected to run at full capacity.
