This proposed deployment would mark the first time US forces have been positioned on Iranian soil since the American withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.
The President’s confidence seems buoyed by the swift and effective operation in Venezuela earlier this year. That mission resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and the acquisition of control over Venezuela’s valuable oil reserves, setting a precedent Trump appears eager to replicate in Iran.
In a related development, President Trump recently asserted his intention to be involved in selecting a successor to the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei of Iran, who was killed a week ago.
