Chicago shooting: 13-year-old boy DeAntwan McKeever dies week after being shot in head on South Coles Avenue in South Chicago

CHICAGO () — A teenage suspect is now facing a first-degree murder charge in the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy on Chicago’s South Side, according to Chicago police.

The victim, 13-year-old DeAntwan McKeever, died one week after he was shot in the South Chicago neighborhood, officials said.

Police said the shooting occurred at about 2:50 p.m. on May 21 in the 8200 block of South Coles Avenue.

Responding officers found the 13-year-old with a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, Chicago police said.

A week later, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the boy had died and identified him as DeAntwan McKeever.

On the day of the shooting, police remained on the block for much of the evening and were seen canvassing the area door to door for surveillance footage.

Two months after the shooting, Chicago police announced that a suspect had been charged in the case.

Police said a 17-year-old boy was arrested Thursday in Chicago and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting.

CPD has not named the suspect because he is a minor.

The teen suspect will appear in court Saturday.

No further information was available as Chicago police continue to investigate.
