California college student, 18, dumped at hospital following fraternity event dies

An 18-year-old California State University, Fullerton student died following a fraternity-related event, and police said alcohol may have contributed to his death.

Anthony Joseph Blas was taken to the emergency department at St. Jude Medical Center shortly after midnight Saturday, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Fullerton Police Department.

Investigators said Blas had attended an event hosted by an unaffiliated fraternity. “Alcohol consumption appears to have been a contributing factor in the male’s death,” police said.

Police said there was no indication that hazing played a role and found no evidence of foul play.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Blas had only recently started college.

In May, Los Altos High School celebrated Blas’ academic achievements and his numerous college acceptances, announcing that he planned to enroll at Cal State Fullerton in the fall.

He had also been accepted to Cal Poly Pomona, Sacramento State, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Arizona, Michigan State, the University of Oregon, Northern Arizona State, Oregon State, Arizona State, the University of Nevada, Reno, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Whittier College, Cal Lutheran, La Verne, Utah State, Utah Tech and the University of Utah.
