2 women shot in separate incidents near NYC’s West Indian Day Parade route, adding to day’s violence

Two women were wounded in separate shootings Monday afternoon near the West Indian Day Parade route in Brooklyn, as violence continued to shadow the annual celebration, law-enforcement sources said.

The first gunfire erupted around 4 p.m. near 798 Nostrand Ave. in Crown Heights, where a woman was struck in the leg, according to sources.

“There were a bunch of people fighting at the top of the block. … And then all of the sudden, you hear, ‘Pop, pop,’” a witness named Edward said, describing the chaotic moments before the shooting.

Photos from the scene showed police officers taking a person into custody.

Minutes later, another woman was shot in the leg in a separate incident at Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue, also in Crown Heights, sources said.

Police were still searching for the gunman in the second shooting, according to sources.

The shootings came after four people were stabbed earlier Monday near Carroll Street and Utica Avenue, shortly before the West Indian Day Parade was set to begin in the neighborhood.
