Individuals on the Brown University campus have been instructed to remain indoors for safety.

RHODE ISLAND, USA — A shooting incident unfolded on Saturday close to Brown University’s campus in Rhode Island, according to the Providence Police.

The incident occurred near the Barus & Holley building, a notable seven-story facility that serves as the home for the School of Engineering and the Physics Department, as detailed on the university’s website. This building features 117 laboratories, 150 offices, and 15 classrooms.

The university released its initial shelter-in-place alert at 4:22 p.m. EST.

Approximately 30 minutes following the alert, the university announced that a suspect had been apprehended, but later updates clarified that this was inaccurate.

By 5:11 p.m. ET, authorities were still actively searching for a suspect and advised those on campus to remain sheltered. An hour after the first emergency notification, additional gunfire was reported near Governor Street, located just two blocks away from the campus.

Officials were still gathering information from the active scene, said Kristy DosReis, chief public information officer for the city.

The Ivy League school is a private, nonprofit institution with about 7,300 undergraduates and just over 3,000 graduate students, according to its website.

Saturday was the second day of final exams for the fall semester.

No other information, including if there are any injuries, is known at this time.
