Arizona Shooting Suspect Arrested, Second at Large After 1 Killed and Fiancée Wounded

Arizona law enforcement officials have taken one man into custody in connection with a violent home invasion shooting that killed a Tucson police recruit and sent his fiancée to the hospital.

Carlos Ramirez, 23, was fatally shot inside his home in southwest Tucson early Wednesday, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said. Ramirez, who had previously served with PCSD as a corrections officer, was set to graduate from the police academy on Aug. 27. His 23-year-old fiancée, whose identity has not been publicly released, is also employed by the department as a corrections officer.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos earlier said the suspects were dressed entirely in black and wearing ski masks when the shooting occurred at about 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Deputies arrested Santiago Jorge Rogers, 39, at a hotel on South Palo Verde Road in Tucson on Saturday morning, the sheriff said in a statement. Rogers is being held without bond at the county jail.

A second suspect, 33-year-old Alex James Barnett, remains on the run. Court records show Barnett, who has also gone by the name Alex Wilson, has a criminal history that includes prior burglary and weapons convictions. In December 2024, he pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful imprisonment.

Alex James Barnett, 33, is still at large after last week’s home invasion shooting that left a Tucson police recruit dead and his 23-year-old fiancée, a Pima County corrections officer, hospitalized with a gunshot wound. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, he was last seen wearing a red shirt and black leather vest and riding a Harley-Davidson FLHXS motorcycle with the Arizona license plate, DA466.

Still images taken from surveillance video at a Shell gas station at 5405 West Valencia Road in Pima County, Arizona, around 5:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19. This is shortly before deputies responded to a 911 call nearby and found a Tucson police recruit dead and his fiancee, a Pima County corrections officer, suffering from a gunshot wound. She was hospitalized in stable condition. Police have arrested 39-year-old Santiago Jorge Rogers and are seeking another suspect named Alex James Barnett, 33, who remains at large as of Monday morning. A third man was identified, contacted by authorities and has not been charged pending further investigation. (Pima County Sheriff’s Department)

A search of Pima County courts for prior cases came back empty for Rogers. However, a man of the same name and age has drug and shoplifting convictions in Yavapai County, possession of contraband behind bars in Navajo and Graham Counties, and a number of lesser charges in Prescott.

Surveillance video shows men identified as Rogers and Barnett in black clothing and picking up items at a gas station convenience store about 20 minutes before the shooting.

Hours later, surveillance video taken from a parking lot shows a third man parking the suspect vehicle, a gray Acura MDX SUV, and walking away.

He has not been publicly identified, but the sheriff’s department said Sunday he had been contacted by detectives.

“No arrest has been made as investigators work to determine his involvement,” the department said.

Anyone with information on the case or Barnett’s whereabouts is asked to call 911 or 520-88-CRIME.
