A man arrested by the NYPD on drug charges died one day after suffering a medical episode while in custody at a Brooklyn precinct, police said.
Reginald Newkirk, 54, was being held at the 67th Precinct in Flatbush as he awaited transport to criminal court for arraignment when his condition suddenly worsened, according to the NYPD.
Emergency responders took Newkirk, a Brooklyn resident, to a nearby hospital shortly before 2:15 p.m. Saturday after he became ill, police said.
He remained hospitalized until his death was pronounced Sunday. The cause of death has not been determined.
Court records show that Newkirk had been arrested Friday on a charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Newkirk’s death comes after a 46-year-old detainee died Sept. 9 following a medical episode inside the Central Courts Building in Downtown Brooklyn, AMNY reported.
In April, Hector Sierra, 51, and Zamiqua Miller, 33, also died after experiencing withdrawal symptoms while in NYPD custody, police said.
The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division will lead the investigation into Newkirk’s death.
