A Georgia man is now facing a federal charge in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 66-year-old great-grandmother on an Atlanta MARTA train. This charge could potentially result in a life sentence or even the death penalty, according to federal prosecutors.
The accused, 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews of Decatur, Georgia, has been charged with committing an act of violence involving a dangerous weapon on a mass transportation system with the intent to cause death. This information comes from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia.
Prosecutors have stated that Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche will make the decision on whether to pursue the death penalty should Matthews be found guilty.
The victim, Margaret Swan, was a 66-year-old great-grandmother. U.S. Attorney Theodore Hertzberg described her tragic death as a “beloved great-grandmother” being lost in a “senseless act of unprovoked violence.”
The attack reportedly began when Matthews allegedly cut Swan’s throat as he approached her while she was seated on a train nearing the Oakland City MARTA station.
