During a leisurely bike ride on a Canadian trail, a couple unexpectedly startled two grizzly bears, leading to an attack.

Local authorities said quick thinking by the woman likely saved both their lives as she used bear spray to drive the animals away.

The encounter occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, while the couple was on their e-bikes near the Kootenay River. The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service (COS) reported that the bears became aggressive when they were caught off guard.

The wife recounted that she heard her husband shouting just before spotting a bear rushing at her. While reaching for her bear spray, she saw another bear attacking her spouse. She used the spray effectively, causing both bears to retreat.

Because the bears appeared to be acting in self-defense, wildlife officials decided not to pursue or relocate them.

Officials emphasized that bear spray is a proven, effective deterrent against bear attacks.

The organization emphasized on their website that, much like a seat belt, bear spray should be regarded as a crucial safety tool when venturing into areas inhabited by wildlife.
