A Florida man and his dog were confronted by an unlikely threat when a crab clutching a blade appeared to charge at them in a bizarre video that quickly went viral.
Eduardo Alvarez, who lives in Florida, posted the startling footage on Instagram with the caption, “Florida is getting out of hand.”
In the clip, Alvarez’s dog, Summer, seems to notice the unusual intruder just before the armed crustacean lunges in the small dog’s direction.
Alvarez immediately steps in to protect Summer, though the agitated crab proves difficult to handle.
“Summer, where the heck did you find a crab with a freaking shank?” Alvarez asks in disbelief.
After several attempts, Alvarez manages to grab the crab and carries the snapping animal farther into his yard.
“Summer, I don’t recommend messing with this,” he cautions his dog.
“This is a gangster-ass crab,” Alvarez jokes.
The animal appears to be a blue land crab, a species found in Florida, generally within five miles of the coast.
Blue land crabs can grow to a leg span of about 12 inches and weigh roughly one pound.
The object in the crab’s claw appears to be a pocketknife, although the video does not explain how the crustacean came to be holding it.
Alvarez’s post generated widespread attention, collecting more than 20 million views since it was uploaded Wednesday.
“I don’t know what’s more surprising; a crab with a shank or you just lifting him up like it’s an everyday occurrence,” one viewer commented.
“You can tell it’s Florida cuz he picked it up while laughing,” another user joked.
Some commenters declared that the scene could “only happen in Florida,” while others debated whether the footage had been generated using artificial intelligence.
The Post contacted Alvarez for comment but had not received an immediate response.
The strange encounter is not the first reported instance of a crab appearing to wield a potentially dangerous object.
In 2022, Michigan native Kyle King, who now lives in Japan, posted unsettling footage of a crab holding a steak knife during a camping trip.
King said he was awakened around 2 a.m. by scratching sounds against his tent. When he looked outside, he was stunned to find a large coconut crab gripping the sharp knife in one of its claws.
