Border Patrol discovers 31 migrants in truck near US-Mexico border

Border Patrol agents made a startling discovery in California’s scorching desert after finding 31 migrants allegedly packed into the rear of a modified utility truck in what authorities described as a suspected human-smuggling attempt.

The overcrowded vehicle was located near Ocotillo, a small Imperial County community close to the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the Border Patrol’s El Centro Sector.

“Smugglers packed 31 illegal aliens like cargo into a modified utility truck and hauled them through dangerous desert heat near Ocotillo, California,” the agency said.

The suspected driver, however, apparently had no intention of staying to answer questions.

Border Patrol said the driver abandoned the truck and ran across the border into Mexico while agents took the group into custody.

His escape was short-lived. Mexican authorities later arrested the suspected smuggler.

“Apparently thinking the border doubled as a finish line,” the agency quipped. “Mexican law enforcement arrested him too, leaving the getaway driver to trade the steering wheel for a jail cell.”

The alleged smuggling operation unfolded in one of Southern California’s harshest environments.

The El Centro Sector covers about 70 miles of the international border across the Imperial Valley, an area that includes vast desert stretches, mountain ranges and agricultural land. Border Patrol operates four stations in El Centro, Calexico, Indio and Riverside.

During the summer, temperatures in some parts of the desert can climb above 120 degrees, creating potentially life-threatening conditions for migrants crossing the region and for agents searching for them.

The truck incident comes as apprehensions along the southern border remain sharply below the historic highs recorded in previous years.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, daily apprehensions along the Southwest border have recently averaged about 258.

Even with that steep decline, migrants and smugglers continue to attempt dangerous routes into California, sometimes with potentially fatal results.

On July 29, officials with the Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection intercepted a small boat about 14 miles west of San Clemente Island off Southern California. Twenty-one migrants were found aboard the vessel.

In August, Border Patrol agents also rushed to rescue a 25-year-old Mexican man who officials said had spent two days stranded after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border and becoming lost in the remote Jacumba Mountains.

The man had run out of water and was “running out of time” when he placed a distress call, according to the El Centro Sector.

Agents obtained his GPS coordinates and scrambled response teams to the rugged area while requesting aerial assistance from multiple agencies.

The unforgiving terrain made the rescue more difficult, with sprawling boulder fields limiting where aircraft could reach.

The latest incident near Ocotillo ended with all 31 migrants in Border Patrol custody and the suspected driver under arrest in Mexico, according to the agency.
