Kansas officers shot: 3 Osage County sheriff's deputies, 1 Kansas Highway Patrol trooper shot in rural Carbondale, police say

In the quiet rural expanse south of Topeka, Kansas, the peace was shattered on Saturday morning when a violent confrontation led to four law enforcement officers being shot. The incident unfolded in Carbondale, involving a domestic violence situation that spiraled tragically out of control.

According to Melissa Underwood, a spokesperson for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the shooting occurred around 10:30 a.m. The victims included three deputies from the Osage County Sheriff’s Office and one trooper from the Kansas Highway Patrol. Their conditions remain uncertain as the situation continues to evolve.

The altercation also resulted in the death of a male suspect, who succumbed to gunshot wounds, confirmed representatives from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the state Highway Patrol. Additionally, another male was injured during the incident; he has been hospitalized and is currently in stable condition.

Authorities report that deputies and troopers had arrived at the scene in response to a domestic disturbance north of Carbondale. The officers had only been present for a few minutes when the gunfire erupted, highlighting the unpredictable and dangerous nature of their work.

In the wake of the shooting, multiple law enforcement agencies quickly mobilized to respond to the crisis, demonstrating the community’s robust support network for its officers in times of peril.

The scene of the shooting is a house off a two-lane road that runs to Topeka. Authorities blocked off the road about six-tenths of a mile south of there.

The area of the shooting is a rural region close to U.S. Highway 75. There is no active threat to the public, Underwood said.
