Security at California Coast Guard base opens fire on U-Haul truck posing 'direct threat'

On Thursday night, shots were fired at a Coast Guard facility in California after a U-Haul truck approached the entrance and ignored security commands to halt, according to Coast Guard officials.

Footage capturing the tense scene shows the truck, headlights on, reversing toward security officers positioned near a vehicle at Coast Guard Base Alameda around 10 p.m. As officers called out commands from behind a barricade, gunfire erupted. Subsequently, the driver accelerated the truck forward.

The U.S. Coast Guard reported that personnel on Coast Guard Island observed the U-Haul behaving erratically as it attempted to back into the base.

The Coast Guard confirmed no personnel were injured during the incident.

The incident followed a protest outside the entrance on Thursday, during which demonstrators attempted to block U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents from entering the base, according to ABC7.

Dozens of California Highway Patrol officers wearing riot gear tried to disperse the crowd in order to allow civilian employees to leave, which resulted in two people being detained and taken away, the outlet reported.
