A man accused of killing his wife in California and fleeing to Peru with their three young children is in custody.

On Wednesday, Peru’s National Police reported that Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo turned himself in at Interpol’s Lima office. Cornejo was wanted under an active Interpol “red notice,” which serves as an alert for global law enforcement to locate and detain a suspect awaiting extradition, according to Peruvian officials.

Police released video showing Cornejo in handcuffs and wearing an Interpol vest.

The search and rescue team identified an item that matched what Cornejo was last seen carrying away from the couple’s apartment complex in Lancaster.

Cornejo is facing one murder charge, accused of using a knife as a deadly weapon. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office revealed in a press release the issuance of an extradition warrant for Cornejo. If found guilty, he could face a prison sentence ranging from 26 years to life.

“The charges against this individual are appalling, and we will vigorously seek his return to our jurisdiction to ensure accountability,” stated District Attorney Nathan Hochman. “Domestic violence wreaks havoc in our communities and devastates families. Our office is dedicated to restoring stability for those affected by such crimes.”

Cornejo and Cabrera’s three children were found safe in Peru and taken into protective custody.
