California parents arrested after newborn found living under I-5 overpass

A newborn was discovered with his parents in a makeshift tent beneath a California freeway, amid suspected methamphetamine pipes, human waste, vomit, spoiled food and piles of trash.

Yolo County sheriff’s deputies went to the area near County Road 19A on Sept. 9 after receiving a report that a man and woman were living under the I-5 overpass with their newborn child.

At the site, deputies found 48-year-old Fernando Esparza and 29-year-old Melissa Rivera inside a tent directly below the freeway. Their baby was just 7 days old.

Authorities removed the infant immediately. AMR medics evaluated the child before taking him to Woodland Memorial Hospital. He was later transferred to a neonatal intensive care unit in Sacramento County for additional assessment.

Detectives and Child Welfare Services then began an investigation into the baby’s welfare, documenting conditions the sheriff’s office characterized as hazardous.

Investigators reported finding multiple suspected methamphetamine smoking pipes in and around the tent, along with extensive garbage, rotten food and sleeping arrangements on a dirt floor with no bedding. Vomit was found on a mattress, while feces were discovered inside a baby carrier.

A garbage bag near the tent also contained the mother’s placenta and umbilical cord.

Because the tent sat directly beneath the freeway, the infant was additionally exposed to what investigators described as “extremely loud noise” from traffic overhead.

According to the sheriff’s office, the parents recognized the risks facing their newborn but said they had planned to wait and take the baby to a hospital for an examination at a later time.

Authorities determined the child’s immediate safety was at risk and placed the infant in protective custody.

The decision sparked debate online, with some people questioning why the baby was separated from the parents.

“Wild to me you’ll help the baby but not the parents, we live in a backwards society,” one commenter wrote.

“This is so sad. That woman is living through hell. Thank God the baby was saved from that and will hopefully have a safe life ahead,” another person commented.

Another commenter blamed Gov. Gavin Newsom, writing, “Newsom’s California. This wasn’t an issue 15 years ago…”

Esparza and Rivera were arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and booked into the Yolo County Jail.
