A chilling message from a drug cartel was displayed on a banner hung across a high school in Tijuana, not far from the U.S. border, following the assassination of a notorious drug kingpin, which has led to unrest.

The banner, which expressed allegiance to Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as “El Mencho,” was unveiled on Tuesday. This came shortly after special forces eliminated the cartel leader during a dawn operation on Sunday.

The ominous text on the banner, when translated, read: “Whether they like it or not, they are ready… at Mencho’s command.”

Although the message did not specifically threaten the high school, authorities opted to cancel classes for the day, as reported by El Financiero.

While the girlfriend eventually left the resort, El Mencho and his men remained holed up in the compound when the Mexican military deployed its special forces to take them out.

Once the troops got inside the Oseguera’s compound, heavily armed men fired at the soldiers, leading to a gunfight and chase in the woods near the resort that resulted in the death of four cartel members.

Three others were critically injured and died while being transported to a hospital in Mexico City, including Oseguera.
