The suspect fled on foot, and officers saw he had a gun, police said Thursday. Chopper 7 was over the scene.

Police said the suspect, 35-year-old McKale Mitchell, assaulted two CPD officers.

CPD said Mitchell disregarded officers’ instructions to drop the gun. That’s when one of the officers shot Mitchell in the leg.

Mitchell was arrested just after 1:45 p.m. Thursday. Police said he was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Two officers were also taken to an area hospital for observation.

Mitchell is being charged with two felony counts of Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer, in addition to other charges. His court appearance is scheduled for Saturday, although it remains uncertain if he is still in the hospital.

The Chicago Civilian Office of Police Accountability is conducting an investigation into the shooting. The officers involved will be assigned to routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
