A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth student has been arrested following a fatal stabbing in Rhode Island.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — An early Saturday stabbing in Rhode Island killed a UMass Dartmouth freshman, injured another and led to one arrest, police said.
The incident occurred after the players went to a Providence nightclub following a game against Framingham State University.
Police identified the victim as 18-year-old Marvins Antoine, a freshman running back. Another freshman, 19-year-old defensive back Kensley Macean, was injured. Authorities said neither student had a relationship with the suspected attacker, 19-year-old Chukwunonso Uzoma-Eze.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said an altercation began between a woman and several victims who were waiting in line before moving to the parking lot.
Police said the event was hosted by a Massachusetts-based promoter.
Antoine suffered a stab wound to the chest and later died at a hospital. Macean sustained injuries to his head, neck and arm and is expected to survive.
UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller said the stabbing did not pose an ongoing threat to the campus community.
“Our hearts and prayers are very much with Marvins’ family, friends, classmates, and teammates as we mourn his loss together,” Fuller said in a statement to news outlets. “We also send our prayers and best wishes for Kensley’s recovery, and hope that he will be able to resume his education here soon.”
Police arrested Uzoma-Eze on the UMass Dartmouth campus and plan to extradite him to Rhode Island for arraignment. He faces a murder charge, while Perez said additional charges could be filed as detectives continue reviewing the evidence.
Students and friends gathered at the campus to mourn Antoine.
“He was there for everybody, whether you were having bad days, good days, he was always there for you,” Jasmin Almeida said. “He was the first person to light up a room.”
