SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (WLS) — Illinois Democratic Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi announces his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat that will be available due to Dick Durbin’s decision not to run for reelection.

Krishnamoorthi is planning three events Friday to kick off his campaign.

“Senator Dick Durbin is a titan who will be remembered as one of the most impactful and dedicated public figures in the history of Illinois. I am incredibly humbled by the support I’ve received from friends, family, and community leaders urging me, as a fellow son of downstate, to pursue the U.S. Senate,” stated Krishnamoorthi.

One of those events will be In Chicago, another in Schaumburg and another in his hometown of Peoria.

Krishnamoorthi joins Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton as publicly declared Democratic contenders. Congresswoman Laura Underwood and former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel might also enter the Democratic race, with Rep. Darin LaHood as a potential Republican candidate.
